General scheme:

The most significant advances in the field of architecture and construction take place in the creative meeting of architecture and industry. This is the thesis of the seminar that was held on November 26, 2010 under the auspices of the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad. In the design of a specific building, the creativity of the architect and the experience and knowledge obtained in our leading industries form a partnership of incomparable potential.

The seminar dealt with the collaboration between architects and industrialists, and its results, through analysis of important examples, as when Lamela joined hands with Folcrá to make the facade of T4 even more immaterial and together they managed to prestress a rigging that surpassed the most ambitious proposals of tensegrity, or when Cricursa, following specifications laid down by Ruiz Larrea, designed the curved glass pieces of the Andalusian Energy Agency. Other examples are Manuel de las Casas and Jofebar cooperating to come up with the frames of pure glass at Castellana 22, or Technal making possible and incorporating into its catalog the Unicity window that Ferrater suggested, or Enric Massip and Martínez Calzón dialoguing to stabilize Diagonal 00 with huge delicate profiles in the manner of ‘bamboos’ produced by Martifer, or Enric Ruiz Geli and Vector Foiltec working to adapt the possibilities of Etfe to the cladding of a tertiary building like the Media-tic. In all these cases, technology has made a major step forward.

Why is it that as present, privileged interdisciplinary contact of this kind not only receives practically no public aid, but on the contrary, is restrained by contract laws prohibiting such creative rapprochement? How can it be that construction firms mediate to forbid it altogether? Up to what point can industries absorb the cost of innovative engineering without contractual guarantee of recompense? Why allow this potent innovation only in buildings of such high cost that they have wide margins for experimentation, as in a this-time-we-can-allow-it whim?

Sponsors:

For this seminar, the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad counted on the support and generous sponsorship of Cricursa, Folcra, Jofebar, Martifer, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Public Works, Renfe, Technal, Unidad Editorial and Vector-Foiltec.
