General Theme:

One of the main goals of the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad (Architecture & Society Foundation) is to promote research on traditional building materials like wood, glass, and brick. And to foster discussion on how these materials can be produced and used from a sustainable and environmental perspective. But at the same time, with the aim of bringing new solutions to the new problems that we face in society.

And as an expression of its educational vocation, the Foundation organizes activities meant to help explore into the ways in which these materials can possibly be used, now and in the future, in architecture and elsewhere. It is along these lines that the Foundation brought together a group of renowned and prestigious professionals who, from different angles, are concerned with studying the prospects of innovation and change that the materials offer.

With the idea of a laboratory for innovating with materials, the event took the following pattern:

A series of conferences and debates between architects in their capacity as motivators, technologists knowledgeable in the qualities of the materials being discussed and qualified to propose innovative uses, and manufacturers who will account for the industry’s capacity (and even commitment) to supply the market with the new formats and uses that the technologists would like to avail of.

The discussions of the experts on the themes in question, each speaking from a particular angle of their field, took place on the mornings of two consecutive Fridays, and a round table dialogue in the afternoon closed each series or laboratory.

The round table discussion served as a forum for debate on the different postures taken in the series, and extract conclusions about each material’s future use and application in architecture. All conferences, debates, and round table discussions will be compiled in a publication.
